In a proactive move aimed at enhancing public safety, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to enforce the mandatory installation of fire safety equipment in buildings, aligning with the stipulations of the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2019, as amended. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, revealed this development at Alausa, Ikeja, on Wednesday, January 24, 2024.
Urgency Reinforced by Recent Fire Incident:
Highlighting the urgency of this initiative, Commissioner Olumide referenced the recent fire outbreak at the Mandilas building on Broad Street, Lagos Island. He underscored that this incident serves as a compelling reminder for all stakeholders to comply with Physical Planning Laws and prioritize the construction of buildings that adhere to stringent safety regulations.
Commissioner Stresses Importance of Compliance:
In a statement, Olumide emphasized the crucial role fire safety devices play in buildings, likening their significance to maintaining proper setbacks and airspaces. He noted that these requirements are not merely bureaucratic measures but are in place to safeguard lives and property, making strict compliance imperative.
Olumide issued a stern reminder to property owners and developers, urging them to adhere scrupulously to the stipulations of Physical Planning Laws to mitigate the risk of having their properties sealed.
Background and Legislative Measures:
Recalling developments from July 2021, the Lagos State House of Assembly proposed a bill advocating for the compulsory installation of fire-fighting equipment in all buildings across the state. This proposal was part of a comprehensive bill titled “A Bill for a Law to Establish the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and for Connected Purposes,” discussed during a one-day public hearing.
The proposed legislation outlined specific requirements, mandating the inclusion of fire safety gear such as conventional fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, central fire alarm systems, hose reel equipment, and automatic fire detection and suppression systems for buildings with two or more storeys, including Fire Master 200/Pyrogen.
Call to Action:
As the Lagos State Government takes decisive steps to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations, property owners, and developers are urged to proactively adopt these measures. The move is seen as a crucial aspect of fortifying urban resilience and fostering a safer living environment for all residents.
