In a bid to enhance road safety and enforce traffic regulations, the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) has announced its intensified focus on commercial yellow-branded buses, commonly referred to as ‘Danfo’ and ‘Korope’ buses. This decision, aimed at curbing violations of the Road Traffic Law 2021, was articulated by Akin-George Fashola, the Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer of VIS, during a recent appearance on the Channels Television breakfast show, The Morning Brief.
Fashola emphasized that while the VIS’s mandate encompasses all vehicles, their enforcement efforts will predominantly target commercial transport operators in the state. This strategic shift aligns with the agency’s commitment to prioritizing public safety and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.
Addressing concerns about the impact of enforcement activities on private vehicle owners, Fashola reassured the public that advancements in technology have enabled the VIS to address violations by private citizens without causing undue disruption on the roads. He highlighted the effectiveness of technological tools in streamlining enforcement activities and emphasized their role in maintaining order on Lagos roads.
Fashola further elaborated on the agency’s approach to addressing one-way driving violations, stating that while it is not their primary focus, they remain empowered to undertake enforcement actions as necessary. He also acknowledged challenges posed by the theft of signposts indicating exclusive one-way roads, contributing to the prevalence of such violations.
The VIS’s renewed focus on commercial transporters underscores the state government’s commitment to improving road safety and promoting compliance with traffic regulations. As the agency intensifies its enforcement efforts, commuters and road users can expect increased vigilance and adherence to traffic laws across Lagos State.
