Director of the West African Region for the World Aquaculture Society (WAS), Lanre Badmus, shed light on Nigeria’s aquaculture sector, revealing its staggering potential to generate an estimated $296 billion in annual revenue.
Badmus commended the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in establishing the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine, recognizing its pivotal role in promoting sustainable development within the maritime sector. He emphasized the importance of maximizing the sector’s resources to bolster Nigeria’s income generation and overall economic prosperity.
The director underscored the vast opportunities within Nigeria’s blue economy, emphasizing the significant impact it could have on the nation’s GDP. With an expansive coastline spanning 870 kilometers and abundant marine resources, Nigeria stands poised to capitalize on the thriving blue economy.
Badmus urged the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine to adopt strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing productivity and profitability within the aquaculture sector. He highlighted the potential for job creation across various industries, including fishing, aquaculture, maritime transport, tourism, and renewable energy.
Furthermore, Badmus emphasized the need for innovative approaches across multiple thematic areas, including technology, science, social development, governance, and economic growth. He stressed the importance of leveraging knowledge and expertise to unlock the sector’s full potential.
