In a move aimed at enhancing data protection initiatives in Nigeria, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with key stakeholders. The agreements, signed with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC), underscore NDPC’s commitment to safeguarding data privacy across diverse sectors in the country.
The first MoU, inked between NDPC and SMEDAN, seeks to bolster data protection measures among the 40 million Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. Through collaborative efforts, including the establishment of a dedicated working group, the initiative aims to equip SMEs with the knowledge and tools necessary to ensure the privacy and security of data. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner/CEO of NDPC, expressed optimism about the collaboration, highlighting the potential for sustained growth through the responsible use of data.
In addition to the partnership with SMEDAN, NDPC also formalized its commitment to data protection in the gaming sector through an MoU with NLRC. This agreement reinforces the adherence to data protection laws and the implementation of best practices in data storage and processing. Lanre Gbajabiamila, Director General of NLRC, commended NDPC’s efforts and expressed willingness to collaborate on awareness campaigns and capacity building initiatives.
Speaking on the significance of these partnerships, Olatunji emphasized the importance of protecting the personal data of millions of individuals within the gaming sector and stressed the need for training and compliance to ensure data privacy. He reiterated NDPC’s mission to promote data protection and privacy across various sectors in Nigeria, underscoring the collaborative approach taken to achieve these objectives.
The signing of MoUs with SMEDAN and NLRC marks significant milestones in NDPC’s mission to advance data protection initiatives in Nigeria. By fostering collaboration and promoting awareness, NDPC aims to create a culture of compliance and responsibility in data management across SMEs and the gaming sector, ultimately contributing to sustainable growth and development in the country.
