A sudden surge in electric power led to a catastrophic fire that engulfed a four-storey residential and commercial building in Lagos on Wednesday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident in a statement issued from Ikeja on the same day.
“The fire, which initially broke out at No. 47 Dosunmu St., swiftly spread to four adjacent buildings, resulting in significant structural damage,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
He further noted that the primary building at No. 47 Dosunmu St. collapsed under the intense heat and flames, exacerbating the severity of the situation.
In response to the emergency, LASEMA’s rapid response team, alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other relevant agencies, swiftly mobilized to the scene. Additionally, fire personnel from the Nigerian Ports Authority, officials from the Lagos State Ambulance Service, and personnel from various other relevant agencies, including officers from the Nigeria Police Force, joined efforts to combat the inferno.
“All responders are actively engaged in managing the incident under the supervision of the Commissioner for Special Duties and Internally-Generated Revenue, Gbenga Oyerinde,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
The devastating incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced fire safety measures and highlights the critical role of emergency responders in mitigating such disasters. As efforts continue to contain the blaze and assess the extent of the damage, residents and authorities alike remain vigilant to prevent similar incidents in the future.
