The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) has forged a collaboration with the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, to harness nuclear science and technology for electricity production.
Speaking at the 20th Anniversary Symposium of Nigeria’s first Nuclear Research Reactor-1 (NNR-1) in Zaria, Yusuf-Aminu Ahmed, Chairman of NAEC, unveiled plans to leverage the expertise garnered in nuclear power to propel the nation into the next phase of energy generation. Ahmed’s announcement included President Bola Tinubu’s directive to the commission to contribute to Nigeria’s clean energy initiatives, with nuclear energy poised to play a pivotal role.
While specifics regarding the project timeline remain undisclosed to the public, Ahmed noted the close collaboration between international partners, vendors, and the commission. He hinted at imminent announcements following the signing of intergovernmental agreements with key vendors.

George Akume, representing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, emphasized the significance of the two-decade-long safe operation of the nuclear research reactor, highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to the responsible utilization of nuclear energy. Akume suggested that with the successful operation of the research reactor, acquiring a nuclear reactor for electricity generation is within reach.
Meanwhile, Sunday Jonah, Director of the Centre, celebrated the milestone of two decades of safe operation, maintenance, and utilization of the NNR-1. However, Jonah expressed concerns regarding the alleged attempts by NAEC to assume control of the center from the university through the proposed NAEC Bill 2022. He argued that such a move would contradict the original vision of fostering a research and development culture within universities.
As Nigeria seeks to diversify its energy sources and address its power deficit, the collaboration between NAEC and ABU Zaria represents a significant step towards leveraging nuclear technology for sustainable electricity generation. The nation eagerly anticipates further developments in this promising venture.
