The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that candidates for the upcoming November West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will have the option to take the exams on computers or use the traditional paper-and-pencil format.
This announcement comes after the successful rollout of the first-ever computer-based WASSCE, also known as CB-WASSCE, in January and February. According to WAEC Head of National Office, Nigeria, Amos Dangut, the initial CBT exams saw a significant decrease in malpractice compared to previous paper-based exams.
Dr. Dangut emphasized that the new option is part of a larger plan to expand computer-based testing to all schools in collaboration with the Nigerian government. WAEC is working to provide schools with the necessary facilities and training to facilitate this transition.
The WAEC boss highlighted the importance of keeping pace with technological advancements, not just for examinations but for the overall development of the educational system. He commended schools that have already implemented measures like metal detectors and CCTV to ensure exam security.
The move towards CBT exams was also applauded by Mr Muhammad Musa, the National President of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS). He stressed the importance of well-trained teachers and government support in infrastructure development for a robust educational system.
