In the past year, the Blue Line of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit has successfully transported approximately two million passengers. This significant achievement was announced by Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), in a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Kolawole Ojelabi, on Wednesday in Lagos.
The Blue Line, inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 23, 2023, began passenger services on September 4, 2023, after undergoing a series of rigorous test runs. Powered by electricity, this rail line is the first of its kind in West Africa.
Akinajo highlighted the Lagos State Government’s satisfaction with the safety record of the Blue Line, describing it as a realization of the state’s vision for an inter-modal integrated transport system. “On this significant occasion, we reflect on the profound impact this transformative project has had on Lagos and its residents,” she said.
The Blue Line connects Lagos residents from Marina to Mile 2, offering a reliable and efficient transportation option. It has been embraced by a diverse range of commuters, including white-collar workers, entrepreneurs, students, and tourists, all of whom have contributed to the state’s economic growth.
“In the past year, the Blue Line has served an impressive two million passengers without major disruptions,” Akinajo noted. “In August 2024, we increased the daily frequency of trips from 54 to 72, reducing travel time between Marina and Mile 2 from around 30 minutes to 18 minutes.”
The success of the Blue Line has drawn international attention, sparking interest from potential investors in future rail infrastructure projects in Lagos. This milestone, Akinajo added, underscores LAMATA’s commitment to providing world-class transportation solutions for the citizens of Lagos.
Akinajo also emphasized LAMATA’s dedication to expanding the rail network and improving the overall transport experience in Lagos. “We are thankful for the ongoing support from the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration, our partners, and the people of Lagos,” she concluded.
