In a recent announcement, the Lagos State Government has strongly advised members of the Association of Estate Agents in Nigeria (AEAN) against engaging in property transactions without obtaining a Planning Permit within the state. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, conveyed this directive during a courtesy visit by the association’s leadership to the ministry.
Highlighting the influential role of AEAN as a key stakeholder in the built environment, Commissioner Olumide urged members to actively contribute to the pursuit of organized, orderly, and sustainable development by ensuring that proper building practices are adhered to.
Commissioner Olumide emphasized the importance of AEAN members requesting and verifying Planning Permits before participating in property transactions. He clarified that this measure would aid in combating illegal developments and promoting sustainability, dispelling misconceptions about the perceived complexity of the Planning Permit acquisition process.
Contrary to common belief, Olumide clarified that even existing buildings without a Planning Permit can apply for one, underscoring the importance of awareness among AEAN members and the public.
To further support the government’s initiatives in the sector, Commissioner Olumide proposed that AEAN assist in monitoring, whistle-blowing, and training artisans on the implementation of standard measures at construction sites. He expressed confidence that collaboration with the Association of Estate Agents of Nigeria could significantly contribute to reducing building collapses in Lagos State.
Olumide encouraged AEAN to align with the Lagos State Urban Development Policy by submitting memorandums that would contribute to shaping the policy. Additionally, he urged the association to extend its collaboration to the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), responsible for the regeneration program initiated by the Lagos State Government.
In response, Gbenga Ismail, the Vice Chairman of AEAN, conveyed the association’s intention to collaborate with the government in sanitizing the built environment, especially as they marked the first decade of their existence. This move reflects the commitment of both government and AEAN to fostering a transparent, compliant, and sustainable real estate sector in Lagos.
