The Federal Government has intensified its efforts to fortify safeguards against losses and inaccurate measurements, affirmed Ambassador Nura Rimi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment. These remarks were made during the Weights and Measures Department Quarterly Assembly convened in Abuja on Thursday.
Rimi underscored the crucial role of enforcing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) within businesses to achieve this objective, emphasizing the department’s pivotal significance to the nation’s economy. He noted President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to revitalizing the economy for sustained inclusive growth, aligning with the assembly’s theme, “Reviewing the Legal Metrology Standard Operating Procedures for Sustainable Economic Growth.”
Addressing challenges posed by conflicting sections of the Petroleum Industry Act, Rimi reiterated the government’s resolve to elevate the weight and measurement department to an agency status, a move intended to enhance its operational efficiency.
Encouraging participants to chart robust and progressive roadmaps, Rimi urged reflection on their mandate, advocating for diligence and professionalism. Echoing these sentiments, Olajide Bamidele, Director of the Weights and Measures Department, stressed the critical role of legal metrology in shaping Nigeria’s economic landscape.
He emphasized the necessity of adhering to stringent standard operating procedures to safeguard consumer and business interests, highlighting the imperative of evolving legal metrology practices to address emerging challenges effectively. Bamidele underscored proactive approaches to refining procedures, ensuring compliance with regulations, and adapting to dynamic market trends to foster an environment conducive to business growth, consumer trust, and economic prosperity.
