The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has clarified that it has no intentions of imposing taxes on online content creators.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a representative from the agency emphasized that skit makers fall outside the scope of the FIRS’s taxation jurisdiction. The source elaborated that while personal income tax falls under state governments’ purview, the FIRS exclusively handles company income tax. Moreover, the obligation to pay tax applies solely to corporate entities generating profits of N25 million and above.
Recent media reports had circulated claims that the FIRS labeled media content creators and influencers as significant contributors to tax evasion.
Meanwhile, the FIRS has announced the introduction of a new framework aimed at enhancing the nation’s tax administration. Zacch Adedeji, the Executive Chairman of the FIRS, explained that this restructuring endeavors to modernize tax administration by adopting an integrated approach and leveraging technology at every stage.
Adedeji emphasized that the revamped structure aims to simplify taxpayer services by consolidating core functions and support services. The goal is to tailor services to specific taxpayer segments, ensuring a seamless and user-friendly interaction for all taxpayers.
This restructuring signifies the FIRS’s commitment to innovation and adapting to the evolving needs of taxpayers in today’s rapidly changing world. It marks a departure from traditional tax categorization methods, highlighting the agency’s dedication to providing efficient and contemporary tax administration solutions.
