The Office of the African Union Chairperson’s Youth Envoy, in collaboration with Google, has unveiled the #DiscoverMyAfrica Shorts Challenge, a month-long campaign aimed at spotlighting the rich tapestry of African culture and heritage.
Chido Mpemba, African Union Chairperson’s Youth Envoy, emphasized the initiative’s role in empowering African youth to share their stories and cultural wealth globally. The partnership with Google aims to foster creative expression and dialogue on content responsibility, digital preservation, and the impact of AI on Africa’s creative industries.
Throughout May, YouTube creators across Africa are encouraged to contribute short videos capturing their unique perspectives, using the hashtag #DiscoverMyAfrica. Addy Awofisayo, head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa at YouTube, highlighted Google’s commitment to supporting Africa’s diverse voices and talents, providing valuable platforms for filmmakers, musicians, and content creators to connect with global audiences.
The challenge invites creators to showcase various facets of African life, from music and art to food, fashion, and local landmarks. Additionally, YouTube Music Nights in Nigeria and South Africa will spotlight Afrobeats and Amapiano rhythms, while dedicated playlists will feature emerging talent and iconic voices from Africa’s music scene.
Notable figures like Nollywood superstar Osas Ighodaro and content creators Enioluwa and The Geng will premiere exclusive shows on YouTube, offering viewers immersive experiences into the vibrant culture of Africa.
Aspiring filmmakers and content creators can also benefit from specialized workshops, including a dedicated Nollywood workshop in Nigeria and broader #DiscoverMyAfrica workshops designed to enhance skills and expand reach.
The #DiscoverMyAfrica Shorts Challenge underscores Africa’s commitment to celebrating its cultural diversity and empowering its youth through creative expression and digital innovation.
