The Lagos State Government has called on heads of agriculture and social services across its 57 local councils to improve agricultural practices in an effort to address food shortages in the state.
During an interactive session held at the ministry in Alausa, Ikeja, Nurudeen Agbaje, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Rural Development, highlighted that food shortages are largely due to the limited number of individuals engaging in agriculture. He underscored the necessity of an agricultural revolution and the importance of focusing on grassroots initiatives.
Agbaje urged the Heads of Agricultural Departments to equip local farmers with essential skills for year-round farming. He assured attendees that the state government would continue to invest in and enhance the agriculture sector to address issues in food production and distribution. Agbaje encouraged the participants to identify areas where government support could boost agricultural output.
He emphasized that achieving food security is a collective responsibility and called on all stakeholders to partner with the agriculture sector. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, commended the local officials for supporting rural farmers. Represented by Tawakaltu Kosoko, Director of Rural Agriculture, Bolarinwa reiterated the state’s commitment to fostering agricultural development, especially at the grassroots level.
Bolarinwa announced plans for future meetings aimed at training rural farmers in improved agricultural methods and tools to enhance productivity.
Rasheed Bada, Chairman of the Body of Heads of the Department of Agric. & Social Services, applauded the Sanwo-Olu administration for transforming the Office of Rural Development into a hub where rural farmers can access vital information and opportunities. Bada affirmed the body’s commitment to supporting the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus Agenda to make Lagos State a 21st-century economy.
