The Lagos State Government has formed a partnership with the U.S.-based Project Management Institute (PMI) to improve project management practices across 45 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in the state. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the State House in Marina, under the supervision of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
This collaboration aims to optimize resources and streamline the execution of 1,830 ongoing capital projects in Lagos. It is a part of the state’s broader strategy to enhance efficiency, reduce risks, and improve the quality of life for residents through better project implementation.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of the partnership amid global economic challenges and rising material costs. He highlighted the need for strategic resource allocation and validated project management strategies to ensure timely project delivery.
“We are at a critical time when leaders are finding it challenging to implement projects that will improve the quality of life for their citizens,” said Sanwo-Olu. “The global disruptions of recent years have made long-term project planning difficult, but we must make decisions in this challenging environment.”
The MoU was signed by the Project Implementation and Monitoring Unit (PIMU) of the State Government and PMI’s team, led by George Asamani, Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa. Asamani stated that the agreement would bring cutting-edge skills, knowledge sharing, and training to assist the state in delivering projects with quality assurance.
Olusegun Sanwo-Olu, Executive Assistant to the Governor on Project Implementation and Monitoring, noted that PMI’s five decades of expertise would enhance efficient management and capacity building in line with the highest standards of excellence. He also pointed out the benefits of the collaboration, including improved project management practices that ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget.
The Lagos State Government also announced plans to construct 31 bus shelters along the Igando to Iyana-Iba axis as part of the Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) project package 3, aiming to enhance public transportation infrastructure. Moreover, the government has initiated the construction of two interchange hubs at Mile 2 and Marina to integrate various transportation modes, ensuring seamless connectivity between rail, water, and road networks.
