Abdullahi Mustapha, Director General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), has highlighted the significant potential of biotechnology to drive new industries and create employment opportunities in Nigeria. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN || Text Excluding Headline) on Wednesday in Abuja, Mustapha emphasized that staying ahead in biotechnological advancements is crucial for enhancing Nigeria’s and Africa’s global competitiveness.
Mustapha pointed out that industrial biotechnology could revolutionize Nigeria’s manufacturing processes, making them more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. He explained that by utilizing enzymes, microorganisms, and bio-based materials, Nigeria could produce a wide range of products, from bio-based chemicals to biodegradable plastics. This would reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels and open up new opportunities for industrial growth and innovation.
However, Mustapha noted that realizing the full potential of biotechnology requires a collaborative effort from all stakeholders. He called for increased investment in research and development, stronger educational institutions, and a supportive environment for innovation and entrepreneurship. He also emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships, international collaborations, and favorable policies to drive the biotechnology agenda forward.
The NBRDA chief expressed optimism that biotechnology would serve as a catalyst for economic growth, social progress, and environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
