Olatomiwa Williams, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Microsoft Nigeria and Ghana, has underscored the critical role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in driving Nigeria’s economic development. Speaking at the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) induction ceremony in Lagos, Williams stressed that leveraging AI technologies could unlock opportunities, spur innovation, and improve the standard of living across the nation.
Williams pointed out that Africa’s economy could grow by 50% of its current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030 if the continent captures just 10% of the global AI market. She also projected AI spending in the Middle East and Africa to reach $3 billion by 2024 and $6 billion by 2026.
She encouraged the integration of AI into governance and leadership, noting that it can transform sectors by boosting productivity and enhancing decision-making processes. However, Williams also raised concerns about AI’s ethical implications, urging organisations to adopt principles that ensure responsible and transparent use.
Alhaji Tijjani Borodo, President of CIoD, echoed these sentiments, emphasising the need for leaders to engage with AI technologies to ensure long-term organisational success while upholding ethical standards.
