Microsoft and the U.S. Justice Department announced on Thursday the seizure of more than 100 websites allegedly used by Russian cybercriminals for fraud and abuse in the United States. The seized sites were reportedly operated by a group, codenamed “Star Blizzard,” which Microsoft tracked between January 2023 and August 2024. During this period, the group targeted more than 30 civil society organisations, including journalists, think tanks, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
“The Russian government was behind this operation, using seemingly legitimate email accounts to trick Americans into revealing sensitive information,” stated Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco. “With the continued partnership of the private sector, we will remain relentless in exposing Russian actors and cybercriminals, cutting off their access to tools for illicit activity.”
Microsoft described “Star Blizzard” as a persistent threat, carefully studying their targets and posing as trusted contacts to steal information. “While we expect them to continue establishing new infrastructure, today’s action strikes a blow at a critical time, as concerns over foreign interference in U.S. democratic processes are heightened,” the company said.
Microsoft had previously issued warnings about Russian operatives seeking to influence the U.S. presidential election in November.
