The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has mandated the removal of all unauthorised gates and barriers across the metropolis, citing their adverse impact on traffic flow, emergency access, and public safety.
In a statement on Monday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced that residents have seven days to dismantle such structures. Failure to comply will result in enforcement actions, including removal and penalties, as outlined in existing regulations.
Osiyemi highlighted a surge in unauthorised gates, particularly in the Lekki area, with many erected without the ministry’s approval. He noted that even some approved gates are being mismanaged, as residents fail to adhere to established guidelines.
“This non-compliance disrupts traffic flow, hampers emergency access, and endangers public safety. The ministry is committed to addressing this issue,” Osiyemi said.
He reiterated that gates on public roads must remain open for public use from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. Between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., gates may be closed but must be promptly opened during emergencies to allow access for first responders.
Osiyemi urged Community Development Associations (CDAs) to ensure approved gates are manned by security personnel and comply with the guidelines to foster a safe and interconnected transportation network.
He warned that non-compliance would attract strict penalties, adding, “All residents in areas with gates and barriers are encouraged to follow these regulations to maintain accessibility and public safety across Lagos State.”
