The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has announced the ministry’s commitment to harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance teaching and learning, while safeguarding human agency in education.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja to commemorate the International Day of Education, Alausa, represented by Ejeh Usman, Director of Polytechnics, unveiled plans to incorporate AI into educational curricula. The theme of the 2025 event, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” underscores the importance of balancing automation with human involvement in education.
“As AI transforms education, we must ensure it enhances, not replaces, the critical role of educators in shaping young minds,” Alausa stated. “Our vision is to empower students and educators by integrating AI responsibly, while preserving the unique qualities that make us human.”
The minister highlighted ongoing efforts to digitalise education, including the introduction of platforms such as Inspire for Students and Ignite for Teachers, which simplify classroom and lesson planning. Other initiatives include the Nigeria Learning Passport, offering over 15,000 free online resources for primary and secondary students, and the Tertiary Information System (TIS) portal, which centralises undergraduate data.
Alausa also noted potential applications of AI in education, such as smart content creation, virtual reality, gamification, predictive analytics, and AI chatbots. He pledged to establish an AI in Education Task Force to develop teacher training guidelines and ensure the adoption of global best practices.
The minister concluded by emphasising the ministry’s dedication to responsible AI integration, collaboration with international partners, and preparing students for a future shaped by automation.
