China’s crude oil and natural gas production exceeded 400 million tonnes of oil equivalent for the first time in 2024, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA).
The NEA highlighted that the country has achieved consistent annual growth of over 10 million tonnes in crude oil and natural gas output for eight straight years.
Crude oil production reached 213 million tonnes in 2024, an increase of 24 million tonnes compared to 2018. Meanwhile, natural gas output totalled 246.4 billion cubic meters, recording an average annual growth of over 13 billion cubic meters over the last six years.
Offshore and unconventional reserves have been key contributors to this growth. Shale oil production surged to 6 million tonnes in 2024, reflecting a year-on-year increase of more than 30 per cent. Shale gas production also exceeded 25 billion cubic meters, maintaining strong performance.
The NEA noted that these milestones underscore China’s efforts to strengthen energy security and expand its domestic resource base.
