Australia has pledged to collaborate with Nigeria in advancing climate-resistant agriculture and addressing climate change challenges. Marc Innes-Brown, First Assistant-Secretary for the Middle East and Africa Division in Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, made this commitment during the 4th Nigeria-Australia “Senior Officials Talks” in Abuja.
Innes-Brown emphasised Nigeria’s strategic global and continental role, stating that Australia seeks to support capacity-building initiatives to help Nigeria tackle climate-related agricultural challenges. He highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen investment ties between both nations, including Australia’s support for Nigeria’s investment forum in Melbourne.
Expressing sympathy for Nigeria’s recent flood-related hardships, Innes-Brown reiterated Australia’s commitment to fostering cooperation in climate resilience and sustainable agriculture. He noted that despite geographical distance, both nations share governance structures, leadership roles, and aligned foreign policy interests.
Janet Olisa, Director for Regions at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, welcomed the partnership, emphasising its potential impact on trade, mining, and food security. She highlighted the importance of a strong economy in ensuring national stability and fostering agricultural innovation.
