The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has announced the launch of the ‘Omi Eko’ water transport project, a €410 million initiative aimed at transforming Lagos’ inland waterways into a modern transport network.
LASWA’s General Manager, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, confirmed the funding structure, stating that €360 million will come from the French Development Agency (AFD), European Union (EU), and European Investment Bank (EIB), while the Lagos State Government will provide €40 million, with €10 million from private sector investment.
Enhancing Waterway Transport & Reducing Traffic Congestion
Set to run until 2030, the Omi Eko project will ease congestion on Lagos roads by integrating water transport with existing road and rail networks. Key developments include:
- Dredging and navigation of 15 ferry routes
- Deployment of over 78 large-capacity electric ferries
- Construction and renovation of 25 ferry terminals with charging stations
Each terminal will feature modern amenities, including parking, waiting areas, digital payment systems, and improved safety measures.
The initiative prioritises sustainability, featuring low-emission electric ferries to curb pollution. A smart ticketing system using Cowry Card technology will enhance passenger convenience and reduce wait times.
The public-private partnership (PPP) model will generate opportunities for local businesses, artisans, and tourism hubs along waterfront communities. LASWA is also implementing strict safety protocols, public education campaigns, and compliance measures for passengers and boat operators.
Emmanuel described the Omi Eko project as a game-changer for Lagos, positioning waterways as a key driver of economic growth and sustainable urban development.
