The race for the presidency of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has officially commenced following the release of the candidates vying for the position.
In a statement, AfDB confirmed that the list was finalised after a two-day meeting of the Steering Committee of the Board of Governors at its headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the approved candidates represent a diverse mix of African leadership and development expertise.
“The Steering Committee, after reviewing applications, has cleared the following candidates for the AfDB presidential election set for May 29: Hott Amadou (Senegal), Maimbo Munzele (Zambia), Tah Ould (Mauritania), Tolli Mahamat (Chad), and Tshabalala Swazi (South Africa),” the statement read.
Each contender brings distinct experience and vision, setting the stage for a competitive election that will influence the future of Africa’s premier development finance institution.
The new president will replace Akinwumi Adesina, who has led the bank since 2015, overseeing key reforms and navigating global economic challenges. The election’s outcome is expected to impact Africa’s development strategy, particularly in infrastructure, economic growth, and climate resilience.
