Google has introduced Gemini Code Assist for Individuals, a free AI-powered coding assistant designed to help developers write, debug, and understand code more efficiently.
The tool provides real-time code suggestions, explanations, and completions, integrating with popular development environments like Visual Studio Code and JetBrains. Developers can interact with it using natural language through a chat interface.
Unlike Google’s enterprise-focused version, this free tool offers 180,000 code completions per month, significantly more than GitHub Copilot’s 2,000 completions on its free plan. Users also get 240 daily chat requests, making AI-driven coding support widely accessible.
Additionally, Google has launched Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, which automatically reviews code, detects errors, and suggests fixes within the GitHub platform to improve software quality.
Several startups, including Adauris, Spoonity, Manifold, and Cirkuit, have already adopted Gemini Code Assist, praising its impact on development speed and efficiency.
Google’s move directly challenges Microsoft and GitHub’s Copilot, aiming to attract students, freelancers, and startups with its high-usage free plan.
The public preview is now available, requiring only a personal Gmail account to access via Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, and GitHub.
