President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, sanctioned a 50% reduction in the cost of interstate travel for Nigerians during the festive season, spanning from Thursday, December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024. Concurrently, the President approved complimentary rides for passengers using all train services throughout this designated period. The announcement was made by Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, during a briefing with State House Correspondents at the Aso Rock Villa on Wednesday.
Alake clarified, “The President, through us, is declaring that starting from tomorrow, December 21, Nigerians willing to travel can utilize public transportation, including minibusses and luxury buses, at a 50% discount from the current fare. Moreover, all train services on their existing routes will be provided at no cost to travelers during this holiday season.
“This special presidential intervention will commence tomorrow, Thursday, December 21, and will conclude on January 4, 2024. The Federal Government, in collaboration with transporters, road transport unions, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation, will work cohesively to successfully implement this special presidential initiative.”
Alake assured, “I can confirm that all relevant stakeholders in the industry have been consulted and engaged. The Minister of Transportation possesses comprehensive details and is actively overseeing the implementation. Meetings with the Presidents of various transport unions have taken place, and the execution is well-prepared.
“However, it’s important to note that air travel is not covered by this initiative as it is tailored for the masses. Air travel is considered a luxury, and the focus of this initiative is on the needs of the general public who predominantly rely on other modes of transportation.”
