The Voice of Nigeria (VON) has initiated discussions with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in a bid to forge a partnership aimed at addressing the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news. This significant development came to light during a courtesy visit paid by the Director-General of VON, Malam Jibrin Ndace, to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
In his remarks, Ndace emphasized the critical role of accurate information dissemination, particularly in the face of rampant misinformation prevalent in today’s digital landscape. He extended congratulations to Aminu Maida, the newly appointed Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, and expressed VON’s commitment to collaborating with the Commission in promoting positive narratives about Nigeria, Africa, and the NCC on a global scale.
Highlighting VON’s unique position as a public institution broadcasting in eight languages, including Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Fulfulde, English, French, Arabic, and Swahili, Ndace underscored the organization’s mandate to showcase uplifting stories about Nigeria and Africa. Despite acknowledging the imperfections within Nigeria, Ndace reiterated his dedication to portraying Nigerian and African stories in a credible, truthful manner, advocating for the celebration of the country’s daily achievements and positive narratives.
In response, Abraham Oshadami, the Executive Commissioner for Technical Services at NCC, expressed gratitude for VON’s recognition of the Commission’s value as an asset. Oshadami assured Ndace of NCC’s commitment to fostering the partnership, promising expanded opportunities for VON to share stories that resonate with the Nigerian populace and beyond. While regretting the absence of the Executive Vice Chairman, who was on official duty, Oshadami reiterated NCC’s unwavering dedication to taking the collaboration with VON seriously.
The prospective collaboration between VON and NCC holds the promise of bolstering efforts to combat misinformation and promote positive narratives, ultimately contributing to a more informed and empowered society.
