The Foreign Affairs Ministers of Nigeria and Benin Republic convened a high-level bilateral meeting to discuss enhancing the free flow of trade and commerce between the two neighboring nations, on Tuesday. The closed-door session was held in Anguwar Sule Wara, a strategic border town in Benin Republic, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported.
In a press briefing following the meeting, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Yusuf Tuggar, highlighted that the consultative forum was initiated by the presidents of both countries—President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic.
“The meeting at the Segbana border post in Benin Republic is aimed at revitalizing the border crossing between Tsamiya in Nigeria and Anguwar Sule Wata in Benin Republic through infrastructural development, in line with President Tinubu’s renewed hope initiative. This effort is also intended to strengthen social and economic interactions and expand trade between the citizens of the two nations,” Minister Tuggar stated.
Further discussing the outcomes, Tuggar noted substantial progress in reinforcing the relationship between the two West African countries.
Bashir Adewale-Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), elaborated on the collaborative efforts, stating, “For the past six months, the Nigeria Customs Service has been working closely with the Customs Service of Benin Republic to enhance regional integration and facilitate easier border crossings. This includes revitalizing the border post at Tsamiya and Anguwar Sule Wara. Our current challenge is improving infrastructure at the border to ensure seamless access for citizens of both nations.”
Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi expressed his appreciation for the presidents’ commitment to reinstating the free flow of trade and goods transportation. “Kebbi State has maintained positive relations with the Republic of Benin, which has been beneficial for border communities and residents through economic activities and social interaction,” Governor Idris said.
The meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Romuald Wadagni, Senior Minister in Benin’s Ministry of Economy and Finance and Cooperation; Olushegun Adjadi-Bakaru, Benin’s Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Adidjatou Hassan, General Director of Benin Customs Service, among others.
This landmark meeting marks a significant step towards bolstering economic ties and regional cooperation between Nigeria and Benin Republic, fostering a conducive environment for trade and commerce in the region.
