Meta has announced plans to utilize publicly available data, such as pictures and videos, to train its Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. This update, detailed in its revised privacy policy, indicates that data like posts, photos, and captions shared on the platform, excluding private messages, will be used for AI training.
The tech giant recently notified users of its new AI features, clarifying that by default, all users’ data can be utilized for training its AI models. Although Meta provides an option to opt out, the process is notably cumbersome, requiring users to provide a reason for their request, with Meta retaining the right to deny it.
“We will now rely on the legal basis called legitimate interests for using your information to develop and improve AI at Meta. This means you have the right to object to how your information is used for these purposes. If your objection is honored, it will be applied going forward,” the policy update states.
Critics have raised concerns about the complexity of the opt-out process. A user on X, Tantacrul, described Meta’s notification as intentionally designed to discourage objections, highlighting that each additional step reduces the likelihood of users completing the process.
For users looking to opt out of having their data used for Meta’s AI training, the steps are as follows:
1. In the notifications section, find the message titled, “We’re planning new AI features for you. Learn how we use your information.”
2. Click on it to view the policy update notice, then find and click the hyperlinked words “right to object.”
3. Fill out the form with your country, email address, and an explanation of why you don’t want your data used for AI training.
4. Enter the six-digit One-Time Password sent to your email to complete the form.
5. You should receive a submission confirmation once the process is complete.
This policy change is part of Meta’s broader effort to enhance its AI capabilities, while user reactions highlight ongoing concerns about privacy and data usage.
