The Federal Government has announced a $2 billion investment to roll out 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable across Nigeria, significantly boosting the country’s digital infrastructure. This project is set to increase Nigeria’s fibre optic capacity from 35,000 km to 125,000 km, enhancing connectivity for schools, hospitals, government offices, and businesses.
Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, disclosed this during a visit to the vandalised Digital Innovation Park in Kano. The park had been damaged during nationwide protests in August, but IHS Towers has pledged to assist in its restoration.
Tijani highlighted that the fibre optic project will drive growth across key sectors, including education, healthcare, and agriculture. “Through collaboration with the Kano State Government and the National Broadband Alliance, we are simplifying investment processes for private companies, making Kano a future digital hub,” he said.
The minister also emphasised the importance of technology in diversifying Nigeria’s economy, positioning the country as a global exporter of tech talent. Tijani praised the ongoing Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, which aims to equip Nigerians with vital digital and technical skills.
