Lagos Bus Services Ltd. (LBSL) is taking steps to address prolonged wait times for commuters as demand for its services continues to rise due to the city’s growing population.
Idowu Oguntona, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LBSL, discussed the issue during a radio programme monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday. He acknowledged that many commuters spend extended periods in queues and assured that efforts are underway to improve the situation.
“To address this, we have started optimising our schedule to manage issues as they arise,” Oguntona said, adding that the Lagos State Government also plans to increase the number of buses available to meet rising demand.
He emphasised the government’s commitment to an inclusive transport system, noting that the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority is onboarding private sector participation to enhance services.
LBSL is also prioritising the maintenance and efficiency of its fleet, with regular servicing of buses and comprehensive training for its bus captains.
“We invest heavily in training our personnel to ensure they contribute positively to service delivery,” Oguntona stated.
To improve commuter experience and safety, he highlighted the use of technology, including real-time updates on service delays and routine checks on drivers.
“Safety begins at our depot. No bus is deployed without thorough checks, and drivers undergo regular health screenings, including breathalyzer tests,” he said.
Oguntona also praised the state government’s introduction of digital payment solutions like the Cowry Card, which facilitates seamless payments across buses, trains, and waterways.
“The Cowry Card is affordable and convenient, and it has been widely embraced by commuters,” he added.
