The Lagos State Government has expanded its Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to enhance traffic monitoring and enforcement, introducing stricter penalties for road violations. Running a red light now attracts a N20,000 fine, while exceeding speed limits incurs a N50,000 penalty.
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, unveiled four new ITS sites on Thursday, explaining that the system aims to improve road safety and traffic management. Motorists caught violating traffic laws will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) with details of their offences and corresponding fines.
Technology-Driven Traffic Management
The ITS integrates advanced monitoring technologies to detect traffic violations and manage road traffic efficiently. The system consists of:
- Checkpoint Sites for Speed Detection:
- Alapere, Ogudu Road (80km/h limit)
- NITEL, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way (60km/h limit)
- E-Police Sites for Traffic Violations:
- Allen Avenue Junction
- Nurudeen Olowopopo Road
The e-police sites use high-definition cameras to detect infractions such as running red lights, illegal U-turns, lane violations, and reversing on expressways. These virtual enforcement officers ensure compliance even when physical officers are absent.
Osiyemi stressed that the system is not designed to punish motorists but to promote responsible driving and reduce accidents. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, assured that the ITS is not a revenue-generation tool but a mechanism to enforce compliance with road regulations.
Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatubosun Alake, highlighted that the ITS aligns with Lagos State’s vision for a technologically advanced, safer, and more efficient transport system.
The government urges motorists to obey traffic laws to ensure road safety and orderliness.
