U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 25 per cent tariff on steel and aluminium imports into the United States, reaffirming his commitment to trade protectionism.
“Any steel coming to the United States will face a 25 per cent tariff,” Trump told journalists on Sunday while travelling. When asked about aluminium, he confirmed, “25 per cent for both.”
Trump also revealed plans for additional reciprocal tariffs, with an official announcement expected on Tuesday or Wednesday.
“If they charge us, we charge them,” he stated, emphasising that the new tariffs would take effect almost immediately.
A 10 per cent tariff on Chinese goods had already been implemented on 4 February. Meanwhile, the planned 25 per cent tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada were temporarily suspended for 30 days, pending commitments from both nations to strengthen border security.
Trump, who won the November presidential election on a platform of reducing trade deficits, imposed several tariffs during his previous term from 2017 to 2021.
