Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has launched “Makemation,” a groundbreaking feature film that marks Africa’s first foray into exploring Artificial Intelligence on the big screen. The film, set to premiere on April 18th, was unveiled in Marina, with the governor expressing his commitment to fostering a thriving creative sector through strategic investments and collaborative partnerships.
“This production highlights the power of collaboration. We need more partnerships like this,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated, emphasizing his administration’s dedication to providing platforms for creatives to excel. He praised producer Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji and the film’s cast, which includes Nollywood heavyweights like Richard Mofe-Damijo, Tony Umez, and Shaffy Bello.
“Makemation” delves into the intersection of real life and AI, exploring themes such as STEM education, digital skills, financial literacy, and gender equality. Producer Akerele-Ogunsiji highlighted the film’s aim to inspire indigenous innovation, showcasing how young people can leverage technology to create impactful solutions.
The Lagos State government’s commitment to empowering creatives was further underscored by Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka. She detailed the ministry’s efforts in training nearly 20,000 young Nigerians in various creative fields and forging partnerships with institutions like EbonyLife Academy and Microsoft.
Industry leaders, including Ali Nuhu, Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation, and Olatomiwa Williams, Microsoft’s Country Manager, commended the initiative. They emphasized the importance of responsible AI education and the film’s potential to showcase Nigerian innovation on a global stage.
The film, described as a four-quadrant family drama blending pop culture, research, and AI, aims to engage audiences with its high-tension and comedic narrative.
