In response to the escalating cost of living crisis, the Lagos State Government has announced the reintroduction of a 25% discount on transportation fares for all state-managed services, effective Friday, February 22, 2024.
The decision was disclosed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during a press briefing held with journalists from reputable media outlets, including Channels TV, Arise TV, TVC, and LTV. The initiative, encompassing services such as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), trains, and ferries, aims to provide relief to Lagos residents grappling with the economic downturn.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of easing the financial burden on Lagosians amidst the prevailing economic challenges. He further revealed ongoing discussions with various transport unions to encourage a reduction in their fares, extending the benefits to a wider spectrum of commuters.
An official announcement posted on the Lagos State Government’s X account reiterated Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to implementing the fare reduction for the state’s public transport system. The initiative underscores the government’s dedication to prioritizing the welfare of its citizens during challenging times.
In addition to the fare reduction, Sanwo-Olu provided updates on key infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing transportation in Lagos State. This includes the expansion of the Blue Line Rail project from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, with construction progress already underway. Furthermore, plans for the commencement ceremony of the highly anticipated 4th Mainland Bridge, scheduled for late April 2024, signify significant strides in bolstering transportation infrastructure across the state.
