The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Flux Carbon Pre Ltd., an international agritech firm, to enhance soil quality and promote sustainable agricultural practices in Nigeria.
The agreement was formalized by the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), under the supervision of the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, in a ceremony held on Wednesday in Abuja.
Chief Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, highlighted that the partnership would introduce innovative techniques aimed at improving crop yields and reducing costs for farmers. He emphasized the importance of adapting these innovations to local conditions, leveraging the expertise and resources available in Nigeria.
“Agriculture remains the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, contributing 25 percent to our GDP and supporting over 70 percent of our population. However, the sector faces significant challenges, from climate change and land degradation to rising costs and limited technology adoption,” Nnaji said. “The recent surge in food prices across the nation underscores the urgent need for sustainable and innovative solutions.”
Sam David, CEO of Flux Carbon Pre Ltd., stated that the partnership with NBRDA would drive innovative solutions, particularly in addressing climate change and ensuring food security in Nigeria.
Abdullahi Mustapha, Director-General of NBRDA, noted that the collaboration would support the advancement of smart farming and food production. He also mentioned the agency’s recent release of the transgenic Tela maize variety, stressing the importance of improving soil quality using local and natural resources.
Esuabana Nko-Asanye, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, lauded the initiative, noting that good soil quality is essential for any agricultural success. “Without good soil quality, we cannot achieve any agricultural exploit,” she remarked.
